We’ve all been told to swap out our mattresses at least once every ten years. However, is it just me, or does it appear that some of these newer mattresses can’t last that long at all? If you’ve been wondering about the best mattresses to buy, you’re in the right place. Let’s take a closer look at what type of mattress lasts the longest.
Have you noticed a few bumps on your mattress? Is your back pain killing you? It might be time for a new mattress. But how do you determine which one is the best choice and where to find the most durable mattresses? We are here to answer all your questions.
First and foremost, you should stay away from traditional innerspring mattresses. Traditional innerspring beds generally tend to be lower quality. Instead, you should consider getting a foam mattress. There are a couple of different types of foam mattresses that you can get.
Maybe you’ve even had a memory foam mattress before. But memory foam is not all there is, and in fact, it’s not really the most durable mattress. A latex foam mattress would be a far better choice. A quality memory foam mattress can only last up to approximately 8 years, and the lifespan of a latex mattress is about 12 years on average.
All-foam mattresses, be its gel-infused memory foam, natural latex, or synthetic latex, are generally far better than traditional ones. But we find that latex mattresses tend to be the longest-lasting mattress types.
Latex foam, in contrast to memory foam, is more easily punctured and torn than memory foam. Based on your preference, you can choose lower-density foam beds or sturdy polyurethane foam. If you would like a sturdy mattress, we suggest opting for latex mattresses. And if a softer mattress is a better fit for you, then memory foam would be the best option for you. Both of these will last you a good amount of time and you’ll hopefully be able to get a good night’s sleep again.
If you’d like something in between, then you may want to invest in a quality hybrid mattress. Hybrid mattresses can also last up to ten years. This type of mattress is also a foam mattress, but unlike memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses, hybrid mattresses have a few additional foam layers. They have a high-density foam layer on top, so a durable hybrid mattress can definitely help ease your back pain.
What type of mattress is less likely to sag than others?
Drooping and sagging beds are the most common signs of mattress failure, which is caused by the mattress’s support layer being damaged.
Open coil mattresses are more prone to sagging because the interlocking spring bed is only as strong as the linkages that connect the springs together. According to the frequency with which they are used, an open coil mattress has a lifespan ranging from five to eight years. The mattress should last between five and eight years if you sleep on it every night.
This mattress has a unique feature: it has separate springs that do not droop when broken, unlike regular mattresses. The lifespan of a pocket spring mattress is ten years. If one of the springs in a pocket spring mattress is broken, the rest of the mattress will not be affected.
Pocket spring mattresses cost more than open coil mattresses, so the materials used in their construction are more expensive and of higher quality.
Sink spots can develop in memory foam and latex mattresses over time due to the breakdown of the foam.
Is there a mattress that can last longer than 10 years?
Mattresses should last no longer than twenty years, regardless of their construction.
If used sparingly, most mattresses have a ten-year lifespan if they are made of materials that degrade gradually. If you extend the life of a mattress, you can expect a variety of outcomes.
It’s a matter of adhesion and material degradation. Foam and fibers that have lost their structural integrity may feel like a crisp package as they age in a bed.
Signs that your mattress may need to be replaced
If you’re not sure, the following signs may indicate that it’s time to buy a new mattress:
Your mattress has begun to sag over time.
Your mattress is making a lot of noise.
The smell of your mattress is becoming bothersome.
Allergies are becoming more severe as a result of your mattress. You wake up every day in a constant state of dread. It’s something you’ll never be able to get over. A new mattress will improve your quality of sleep.
If you can’t get help from the manufacturer, there are some general guidelines you can follow. The other side of the memory foam or latex mattress should be flipped 1-2 times a year to keep it fresh. It’s a good idea to rotate your mattress on a regular basis. Your old innerspring mattress should be flipped over at least twice a year.
You can argue that you can just get a mattress topper made of latex and your problems will be solved, but if you have a bump in your bed, a mattress topper can’t help you much. Getting a new mattress is the best thing you can do for both your back pain and your allergies.
How to choose the best mattress for you based on your sleeping position
The best mattress for you will be one that promotes both comfort and proper spinal alignment, taking into account your preferred sleeping position and body type. Not all mattresses will suit your personal needs.
Your bed frame also plays a role in choosing a mattress. If you have a king-sized bed and you sleep with your partner, we suggest that you both get separate mattresses. Since you both probably have different needs, plus, king-sized mattresses are not the most durable, and over time, a bump in the middle might appear.
For back sleepers, for example, memory foam mattresses would not be the best option. If you sleep on your back or your body weight exceeds 200 pounds, you will need a firmer mattress. For you, we would recommend a durable latex mattress.
And for stomach sleepers, the ideal mattress type would also be something firmer since they also need additional support. A latex mattress with latex comfort layers would be perfect for stomach sleepers.
For side sleepers, we recommend quality memory foam mattresses and pillows that can support your neck and shoulders as well. Bear in mind that cheap memory foam mattress toppers can not compare to a durable memory foam mattress. With most of today’s popular mattress brands, you can find a good quality long-lasting mattress.
